Every mom knows that night before leaving
There's one evening that repeats itself in our house before every holiday. The children are usually asleep, the house is finally quiet, and I stand in front of an open suitcase. Swimsuits, shorts, t-shirts, sunscreens, hats, sandals, sand toys, and a pile of other things lie on the bed. At that moment, I always tell myself that this year I will only pack what we truly need.
And then it comes.
"What if they get dirty on the very first day?"
"Is one swimsuit enough, or should I pack a second one?"
"And what if it gets cold in the evening?"
"Shouldn't I pack another hoodie?"
Suddenly I feel that if I leave even one single thing at home, that will be the very thing we'll miss during the holiday. So I keep packing. Just in case. And a little more, just in case.
When I finally manage to close the suitcase, it's so full that I almost have to sit on it. At that moment, I feel good that I'm prepared for everything.
But after returning home, I always discover the same thing.
Half of the clothes remained neatly folded at the bottom of the suitcase all week. The children didn't even take out some of the toys once. The spare shoes weren't worn, and I carried a few things with me just because I couldn't imagine leaving without them.
On the other hand, there were things we used every single day. In the morning when going to the beach, after swimming, during a stroll along the promenade, and in the evening on the way to get ice cream. These proved to be the biggest helpers of the entire holiday.
After several family holidays with the children, I understood one important thing. A good suitcase is not one that is filled to the brim. A good suitcase is one in which things you will actually use are thoughtfully packed.
Since then, I pack completely differently. I no longer try to prepare for every possible situation that might not even arise. Instead, I focus on practical clothes that children like to wear, don't take up much space, and will make our day easier by the sea, at the pool, and during excursions.
If you're currently preparing for a holiday and wondering what to really pack and what can safely stay at home, I've prepared a list of things that have proven most useful to us over the years. I believe it will save you not only space in your suitcase but also unnecessary worries and help you enjoy your time with your children a little more.

Five things I would never leave at home again
After several holidays with children, I know exactly which things will end up at the bottom of the suitcase all week and which ones we use from the first to the last day. If I were to advise someone on what to pack for a child for a seaside holiday, these are my five things without which I can no longer imagine summer by the water.
1. Muslin poncho
If I had to choose just one single item from the entire suitcase, it would be the muslin poncho. We use it after every swim – at the sea, at the swimming pool, and by the pool. Children put it on right after getting out of the water, they don't have to wrap themselves in a large towel, and they can continue playing or go for ice cream. Moreover, it's light, breathable, dries quickly, and takes up minimal space in the suitcase. That's why it's among the first things I pack on top of the suitcase, so it's always at hand.

2. Large water bottle
Maybe it sounds strange, but I don't mean a child's bottle. I mean a large, proper water bottle for me. 😄 When you're running after children on the beach all day, applying sunscreen, building sandcastles, and every ten minutes dealing with who's hungry or who got sand in their eyes, it's easy to forget about yourself. Yet, it's precisely mom who needs enough energy to enjoy the holiday with the children.
3. Spare swimwear
I used to think that one swimsuit was completely enough. Today I know that spare swimwear is priceless on a holiday with children. In the morning, the children swim in the sea, in the afternoon they want to jump in the pool, and in the evening they still want to run by the water. Dry swimsuits are much more comfortable and often prevent unnecessary colds after sitting in wet clothes for too long.
4. Sunscreen
I can't even imagine a summer holiday without quality sunscreen. At the beach, we have one simple rule – it's better to reapply once more than to deal with sunburned skin in the evening. Along with a cap or hat, sun protection is absolutely essential when I'm thinking about what to pack for a child for the sea.
5. Small travel first aid kit
I admit, there are holidays when we don't open it once. And that's exactly the best-case scenario. Nevertheless, I always pack it. Band-aids for scraped knees, disinfectant, fever medication, a thermometer, or insect repellent don't take up much space, but they can solve a lot of minor inconveniences. When you need them, you're grateful to have them at hand.
If I had to summarize it in one sentence, today I no longer try to pack everything we might possibly need. I'd rather pack fewer things, but ones that will truly make our holiday easier and enhance our time together by the sea.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much clothing should you pack for a child for a week-long holiday?
If someone asks me, I always answer the same way – less than you think. 😊
On our first holiday, I felt like each child needed a new T-shirt every day, two pairs of shorts, and extra clothes for every possible situation. The result? Half of the suitcase returned home completely untouched.
Today, I pack much more wisely. If I know we'll have the opportunity to wash clothes at least once or let them dry overnight, a few T-shirts, a couple of pairs of shorts, one pair of long trousers for a cooler evening, and a hoodie are completely sufficient. Most of the day, the children will spend in swimwear or light summer clothing anyway.
Not only will you save space in your suitcase, but upon your return, you won't be unpacking a pile of clean clothes that you didn't even get to wear.
What material is best for summer?
After years of trying different materials, I always come back to the same thing – quality cotton and muslin.
Muslin has proven to be the most effective for us during hot summer days. It's light, breathable, dries quickly, and children feel comfortable in it even after swimming. That's why I also sew our muslin ponchos from it, which many families pack for their holiday as one of the first things.
Of course, every material has its use. For evening strolls or cooler days, I also like to pack a cotton hoodie. However, for the beach and hot afternoons, muslin definitely wins for us.

What should not be missing on the beach?
If I had to pick just a few things that I consider absolute essentials, they would be sunscreen, plenty of water, a head covering, and comfortable summer clothing in which the child can play freely.
And one more thing we always have at hand – a muslin poncho. After swimming, children simply put it on and can continue playing on the beach or go for a walk without having to wrap themselves in a large towel.
These may not be big things, but it's these little details that often decide whether a day at the sea will be full of comfort or unnecessary stress.
Conclusion
After years, I understood one thing.
Children will not remember how many T-shirts they had packed in their suitcase.
They won't remember whether they had three or four swimsuits either.
They will remember the first seashell they found on the beach.
The sandcastle they built together.
The ice cream that ended up more on their T-shirt than in their mouth.
Evening barefoot walks along the sea.
And the shared laughter when no one wanted to get them out of the sea.
These small moments create memories they will carry for a lifetime.
That's why today I try to pack differently than before. I no longer need a suitcase full of "just in case" items. I'd rather pack less, but choose clothes and accessories that truly make our time together by the water easier.
I think the same way when I sew.
When I design new pieces for children, I don't try to create clothes that will just look nice in a photo. I want to sew things that children will love to wear, that will make everyday life easier for parents, and that will become part of the most beautiful summer memories.
