How to dress your baby in winter without stress
A practical guide for moms who want peace, not panic
Winter can be quite a challenge for moms of small babies.
Is he warm enough? Is he cold? Am I over-layering him?
And what if he gets a chill when I take him out of the stroller?
If you've asked yourself these questions at least once, you're not alone. I wrote this article just for you – so you can have clear answers, more certainty, and less stress.
1. The basic rule for winter dressing: layer, don't overheat
The most common mistake we make out of fear is too many layers.
While babies can't regulate their temperature like adults yet, overheating is just as unpleasant (and dangerous) for them as cold.
👉 The golden rule:
Dress your baby in one more layer than you are wearing.
If you're comfortable in a hoodie and a coat, your baby just needs a bodysuit, a hoodie/onesie, and a warm footmuff.
2. How to tell if your baby is too hot or too cold
Forget about hands and feet – they're almost always cooler.
✔️ Check their neck or chest
-
warm and dry → ideal
-
sweaty → too warm
-
cold → add one light layer
This is the most reliable way to be sure.
3. Material is more important than the number of layers
Not all fabrics are created equal. In winter, more than ever, material makes a difference.
Ideal materials for winter:
-
ribbed knit
-
high-quality sweatshirt fabric
-
natural and breathable fabrics
These materials:
-
breathe
-
retain warmth
-
don't scratch
-
don't restrict movement
👉 That's why you'll find pieces in my collection made from soft knits and sweatshirt fabrics that are gentle on the skin and practical for everyday wear.
4. Fewer layers, more comfort
Babies need to move, kick their legs, and roll over.
Clothing that is too tight or stiff prevents them from doing this.
Choose:
-
oversize cuts
-
elastic waistbands
-
pieces that "grow" with the baby
Those that can handle:
-
wearing in a carrier
-
sitting in a stroller
-
lying at home
-
and quick diaper changes
5. Practical winter wardrobe essentials
If I were to simplify a baby's winter wardrobe, it would look something like this:
✔️ a few comfortable bodysuits or t-shirts
✔️ soft leggings or sweatpants
✔️ a sweatshirt or onesie made of comfortable sweatshirt fabric
✔️ a hat that doesn't pinch
✔️ a neck warmer instead of a scarf
👉 Fewer items, but high quality.
👉 Less changing, more peace of mind.
6. Hat and neck: often underestimated details
The head and neck are areas where a baby quickly loses heat.
Choose:
-
hats that fit well but don't pinch
-
neck warmers that cover the neck without unnecessary wrapping
These small details make a big difference – especially when walking in a cold wind.
7. Indoors ≠ Outdoors
This is also a common dilemma.
🏠 Indoors:
-
fewer layers
-
breathable materials
-
comfort above all else
🌲 Outdoors:
-
layering
-
wind protection
-
footmuff as the main "thermal shield"
You don't need two completely different sets of clothes – you just need to know how to combine them.
8. Clothing that helps mom feel more confident
As a mom, you make a million decisions daily.
Clothing shouldn't be another source of stress.
When you choose pieces that:
-
are soft
-
fit well
-
withstand everyday life
-
and you don't have to overthink them
...suddenly winter is a little simpler.
It's with this exact thought that I sew clothes at mojetrdlo.sk – so babies feel comfortable and moms feel more at ease.
