🧣 How to Dress Your Baby According to the Season: A Practical Guide for (Un)sure Moms

Dressing a baby can be a real science for a new mom. More layers? Fewer? Is he cold? Is he sweating? And what if it's 10°C in the morning, but 25°C in the afternoon? If you also ask yourself daily, "how to dress a baby so they are just right," you're in the right place. In this article, I'll guide you through all four seasons and show you how to dress your little darling practically, with love, and with respect for their needs – and yours. And I'll also add my tips for handmade pieces I've created for babies like yours – because I know what really works.

👶 Basic Rules for Dressing a Baby (Year-Round)

Before we dive into specific seasons, it's good to know a few universal principles:

  • The Golden Rule: The nape of the neck doesn't lie.
Don't check their hands or feet; they can naturally be cooler. The nape of the neck will tell you the truth – if it's warm and dry, everything is fine.
  • Fewer layers than mom, not more.
Many moms tend to "overdress" their babies. But if you don't need a sweatshirt, your baby usually doesn't either.
  • Breathable, soft, natural materials are key.
Cotton, muslin, ribbed knit – forget synthetics and polyester. Babies can easily get clammy or overheat in them.
  • Layering, yes; complicated, no.
Avoid pieces that are hard to take off. Opt for more simple layers that you can quickly add or remove depending on the weather.

🌷 Spring – when it's cold in the morning and summer in the afternoon

Spring is beautiful but deceptive. Cold wakes us up in the morning, and we sunbathe on a bench in the afternoon.

How to dress a baby in spring:

  • Long-sleeved bodysuit (ideally made of thin knit)
  • Ribbed leggings or high-waisted sweatpants
  • Oversized sweatshirt or cardigan
  • Thin hat + neck warmer
  • In the stroller: a light blanket, ventilated footmuff liner, or muslin swaddle

Practical tip:

Don't forget the sun – even on cooler days, UV radiation is strong. If it's warmer outside, you can replace the sweatshirt with a light muslin poncho.

👉 From mojetrdlo.sk I recommend:

Ribbed sweatshirt + leggings set – practical, breathable, and thanks to the elastic material, the baby will comfortably wear it for another month longer.

☀️ Summer – less is more

Summer is liberating for many moms – finally no layers needed! But even here, dangers lurk – especially overheating.

How to dress a baby in summer:

  • Short-sleeved bodysuit, or just a romper
  • Muslin pieces – the best you can give your baby in summer
  • Hat or thin cap with a brim
  • No socks if it's hot – feet help regulate temperature
  • For sleep, just a light swaddle or blanket

Practical tip:

In the stroller, use muslin sheets for shade, but be careful not to overheat. Don't completely cover the entire stroller; let the air circulate.

👉 From mojetrdlo.sk I recommend:

Muslin poncho – multi-functional, quick-drying; you can use it as a towel, blanket, sun protection, and a summer jacket.

🍂 Autumn – when you can't decide
